When I talk to my friends about it the answer is always the same: KUZU WHAT? For the first time in the canine and feline field we dedicate an entire article to KUZU, a superfood to be supplemented in case of diseases such as intestinal inflammation, colitis, gastritis and kidney failure.

We already talked about Kuzu in the article How to fight constipation (category: Human), in this post we will see how to use Kuzu in feeding your dog or cat, the properties and how the kuzu is able to unblock constipation but also to block diarrhea, recompacting the stool and rebalancing the intestine … and not only.

Kuzu dog cat Properties

the Kuzu from several years present in my pantry, is a natural thickener and is used for the preparation of sauces, soups etc, the powder of Kuzu can also be used as a therapeutic food, is able to intervene on many problems of the digestive system:

  • Natural anti-inflammatory (stomach)
    Gastroprotector and natural antacid
    Diarrhea with cramps and spasms
    Constipation
  • Gastroesophageal reflux or heartburn
Intestinal inflammation (IBD DOG – IBD CAT)
    Uremic gastritis
  • Reduces pressure

Other properties of Kudzu include myorelaxant, antipyretic, pain-relieving, antioxidant and alkalizing activity.

  • Calcium

    Isoflavones
    Phytoestrogens

    Starch

Kuzu or Kudzu for cat dog

Kuzu or Kudzu is an easily digestible starch, (it does not contain gluten), is extracted from the root of a plant, the Pueraria Lobata, the finely chopped roots produce a white powder similar to potato starch, precisely the starch of Kuzu.

I’ve been using it in the kitchen for a few years and the results are always surprising, soups, soups, sweets and fruit salads are perfect, but when you need to alkalize the body, to treat the flu and to skim the stomach, we prepare the drink of Kuzu.

Kuzu for dog and cat How to prepare the therapeutic drink

For my little friends, I usually make Kuzu like this:

I dissolve a teaspoon of kuzu powder in 1/2 glass of cold water
Put on the fire over low heat and mix until the water becomes transparent (there must be no lumps)

*Doses may vary

The drink of Kuzu is ready and can be added to the pet food of our Pets, for a better therapeutic effect we recommend that the animal drink the drink before meals. *The indications and doses should be customized by the holistic veterinarian based on the clinical history of the animal, diseases and weight.

Kuzu warnings and contraindications

The Kuzu is a safe and well tolerated plant. No significant toxicity or side effects are reported at the usual doses, except for individual hypersensitivity. Do not use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in case of thyroid disease, hormone dependent tumor, before surgery.

References and bibliography

Kuzu slows down chronic kidney failure fibrosis – hepatic fibrosis

Fibrosis is omnipresent among patients with chronic renal failure, regardless of the initial disease. It is characterized by the accumulation of pathological proteins of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the interstitial space between the nephrons.

Fibrosis is a predictor of the decline of renal function, puerarin (PR) extracted from the root of the kuzu plant, has been widely used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of various diseases.

Kudzu has anti-fibrotic effects on liver and kidney fibrosis

Puerarin (PR) has effectively improved the metabolic function of the liver, resulting in a reduction in serum enzyme activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (T-bilirubin), extracellular matrix content (ECM) and increased levels of albumin, total protein (T protein).

Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the initiation and progression of chronic renal disease; it may induce activation of some proapoptotic proteins. Studies suggest that puerarin (PR) improves renal fibrosis by inhibiting apoptosis of oxidative stress-induced epithelial cells.

Standardised extracts are also acquired from the root, reaching concentrations of up to 40%, thus making Pueraria one of the major and most valuable alternatives to soya for the supply of isoflavones.
