Cordyceps sinensis is a medicinal mushroom that is essential for cats and dogs with Chronic Renal Failure (CKD). It acts by reducing azotemia and creatinine, counteracts tubulo-interstitial fibrosis and protects the heart (cardiorenal syndrome). To be effective and safe, it must be certified organically grown (e.g. Cordyceps Aloha).

This is the first mushroom I used for my cat suffering from chronic kidney failure, it was 2011 when I started to document and study mycotherapy in veterinary medicine.

It was 2011 when my 17-year-old cat was diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure (CKD). At that time, the use of mycotherapy in veterinary medicine in Italy was practically non-existent. Studying German forums and translating bibliographies of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I discovered the potential of an extraordinary mushroom: Cordyceps.

Today, years later, my pioneering experience is supported by international scientific literature. Cordyceps is not just a “supplement”, but a powerful bio-modulator that intervenes on the mechanisms of cellular degeneration of the kidney.

Let’s find out how it works and how to choose the right product for our pet.

Mechanism of Action: How Cordyceps Protects the Kidney

Cordyceps sinensis acts on the organism of the animal with CKD through several biochemical pathways.

    1. Reduction of Azotemia (BUN) and Creatinine

Cordyceps improves renal blood flow and increases tissue oxygenation. Biochemical tests show that Cordyceps Aloha (grown at low temperature and oxygen) allows cells to absorb up to 30% more oxygen. This translates into a reduction in acute tubular damage and a lowering of waste values in the blood (BUN and Creatinine).

    2. Renal Fibrosis Blockade (EMT)

The real enemy in chronic kidney disease is tubulointerstitial fibrosis (accumulation of scar tissue). Cordyceps suppresses the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), the pathogenetic process that transforms epithelial cells of the tubules into scar myofibroblasts. It therefore alleviates renal sclerosis, concretely slowing down the disease.

    3. Protection of the Heart-Kidney-Liver Axis

The kidneys do not get sick on their own. CKD often triggers cardiorenal syndrome and liver stress. Thanks to its active ingredients (cordycepin and adenosine), the mushroom reduces oxidative stress and protects heart muscle cells and hepatocytes from uremic intoxication.

    Bioactive ComponentBiological functionClinical Benefit (Cat/Dog)
CordicepineAntibiotic-like and anti-inflammatory action. It inhibits pathogenic bacteria (e.g. Clostridium) without altering the microbiota.
AdenosineNeuromodulating vasodilator. It improves renal and cardiac microcirculation.
Polysaccharides (β-glucans)Immunomodulators.They balance the immune system and reduce systemic inflammation.
ErgosterolPrecursor of Vitamin D2.Supports calcium metabolism, which is compromised in CKD.

    Winning synergy: Cordyceps + Reishi

In my naturopathic practice, I almost always associate Cordyceps with Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum).

    • Reishi acts as a natural cortisone, counteracting inflammation of the gastric wall (uremic gastritis typical of the renal cat).
    • Caution (Interactions): Reishi has a mild hypotensive effect (ACE-like inhibitor). It should be used with caution and under control if the animal is already taking drugs for renal hypertension (e.g. Fortekor or Semintra).

How to Choose and Administer Cordyceps

Medicinal mushrooms are bio-accumulators: they act like “sponges” that absorb nutrients but also heavy metals from the soil. A cheap and uncertified mushroom is toxic to the kidneys!

    1. Which one to buy: Aloha quality

I only recommend products from certified organic cultivation, possibly in Europe or the USA (not in China without strict controls). The Pure Cordyceps Aloha strain (available through AVD Reform or on Amazon) offers a nucleotide concentration 4 times higher than the standard.

    2. Alternative Formulations (For difficult cats)

If your cat rejects the powder or open capsule in food, there are good alternatives:

    • Tablets: Cordyceps Plus Energy and Health Mushrooms (easier to hide in a treat).
    • Liquid Extracts/Drops (Spagyric Mycotherapy): Ideal for direct administration into the mouth via syringe without needle. Often a fruiting body extract (20%) is combined with mother tincture (40%).

    3. The Vitamin C Rule

The beta-glucans of mushrooms are very large molecules. To make them bioavailable in the intestine, Cordyceps must always be administered with Vitamin C (e.g. Acerola, Rosehip or Ester-C).

    • Clinical Note: Vitamin C acidifies the urine. Monitor your cat’s urinary pH with test strips if they are predisposed to calcium oxalate stones.

Naturopath’s warning: These additions are powerful, and in my case (paired with the Heel Protocol), they’ve given my cat years of quality life. However, there are no “copy-paste” protocols. Dosages and combinations should be individualized based on the stage of CKD, blood tests, and individual tolerance. Do not do “do-it-yourself” based on old posts from social groups, but always collaborate with an experienced veterinarian or naturopath.

Question: What is Cordyceps used for in cats with kidney failure?

Answer: Cordyceps improves the oxygenation of kidney tissues, reduces inflammation and lowers the values of BUN and creatinine. In addition, it counteracts renal fibrosis and protects the heart and liver from oxidative stress caused by the accumulation of uremic toxins.

Question: What is the best Cordyceps for cats and dogs?

Answer: The best is the “Pure Cordyceps” of Aloha strain (e.g. marketed by AVD Reform). It is grown organically at low temperatures, ensuring the absence of heavy metals and a concentration of nucleotides 4 times higher than commercial Chinese mushrooms.

Question: How do you give Cordyceps to a cat that doesn’t eat powder?

If the cat refuses open capsules in food, it is possible to use Cordyceps in tablets (to be hidden in a treat) or opt for spagyric mycotherapy in drops or liquid extracts, to be administered directly into the mouth with a syringe.

Question: Why do you need Vitamin C with medicinal mushrooms?

Answer: The active ingredients in mushrooms (beta-glucans) are macromolecules that are difficult to absorb. Vitamin C (such as Ester-C or Acerola) breaks down its structure in the intestine, drastically increasing its bioavailability. Attention: monitor the urinary pH because Vitamin C acidifies it.

Question: Can I give Cordyceps and Reishi together with my dog or cat?

Answer: Yes, the synergy is excellent. Reishi acts as a gastric anti-inflammatory (useful for uremic vomiting) and Cordyceps works on cell regeneration. Warning: Reishi lowers blood pressure, so it should be monitored if the animal is already taking ACE inhibitors.

It was August and I spent my holidays in front of the computer 24 hours a day studying and trying to figure out how to start and above all which Cordyceps to buy (another problem, finding a quality product free of pollutants).

    Cordyceps Aloha

Chronic renal failure in cats Which Cordyceps to choose?

In 2011, in addition to studying the beneficial effects of Cordyceps, I had to find the “Perfect Mushroom” to give to the cat! And after hours of research, reading, and studying the major Cordyceps companies globally, here I am!

A product that I still use today, (after 10 years) the best in the world (for me), the Cordycepes Aloha – produced by Aloha Medicinals – The company has developed an organic and patented cultivation technique capable of recreating the natural conditions of mushroom growth at low oxygen concentration and low temperature; Cordycepes Aloha or (PURE CORDYCEPS) contains up to 4 times the concentration of nucleotides compared to other Cordyceps. Biochemical tests carried out by the Integrated Biomolecule Inc. laboratory in Tucson (Arizona) have shown that theCordyceps, allows you to absorb 30% more O2.

Purchased the product on Ebay UK, with little information but with a lot of hope… I started the administration of Cordyceps.

    Cordyceps Cat Dosage

I began to give Cordyceps diluted in milk with a syringe: first week once a day and then 2 times, increasing the dosages gradually, in the meantime I disseminated my choice and experience in various forums, with constant updates as if it were a real logbook. Soon other users joined me and my cat who led the way! 😉

    Cordyceps Results without side effects

The results arrived a few days after the administration of cordyceps, the cat was visibly much better, showed a new vitality, increased appetite, an unexpected reduction in the number of daily urine. I continued to administer Cordyceps with excellent results until the end, for me it remains together with the Heel Protocol (also little known in Italy at the time) the necessary supplement to help a cat with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease).

Today, almost 10 years later, thanks to my experience, Cordyceps is successfully used by many owners of cats with kidney disease and recommended by veterinarians, not only in ITALY.

Cordyceps Cat Reduces Bun and Creates

The effects of Cordyceps sinensis on the kidney

Cordyceps reduces BUN and creatinine levels in the blood and can significantly decrease the degree of acute tubular damage. It contains more than ten essential amino acids and promotes protein synthesis. It effectively controls hyperphosphatemia and delays the worsening of kidney disease. It has a similar effect to antibiotics, cordycepin inhibits the growth of Clostridium without altering the bacterial flora.

Cordyceps Chronic Renal Failure in Cats Useful for

    • Chronic glomerulonephritis
    • Chronic renal failure
    • Diabetes
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Anemia
    • Asthma
    • Hepatitis
    • Chronic bronchitis
    • Liver damage from chemotherapy

    Cordyceps sinensis attenuates renal fibrosis

and suppresses the induction of BAG3 in the kidney

Renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis is a pivotal event in the progression of chronic kidney disease, characterized by an increase in extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation. EMT of tubular epithelial cells in myofibroblasts is one of the important pathogenetic mechanisms of renal interstitial fibrosis.

Cordyceps sinensis is commonly used to replenish kidney function and treat kidney dysfunction and kidney failure. Co-treatment with Cordyceps sinensis is superior to traditional immunosuppressive drugs for the benefit of patients with nephropathy only,

Cordyceps protects the liver and heart during chronic kidney disease

As we all know, the kidneys are closely linked to the proper functioning of the heart (Cardiorenal Syndrome) and liver.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition in which the kidney progressively loses its function, and this process can quickly lead to deleterious effects in distant organs. Clinical and experimental data suggest that most forms of chronic kidney disease contribute to the development and aggravation of distant organ dysfunction, such as heart failure and liver failure.

Oxidative stress, energy metabolism, amino acid and protein metabolism, and choline metabolism have been considered as links between CKD and extrarenal organ dysfunction. In one study, oral administration of Cordyceps sinensis was shown to significantly attenuate liver and heart injuries.

Almost 10 years later, I can only confirm the great power of Cordyceps in slowing down the progression of kidney disease, in association with the Reishi is the most effective therapy

The effects of Cordyceps + Reishi

Reishi counteracts inflammation of the gastric wall (it is a natural cortisone), together with Cordyceps it protects the liver and heart. Reishi as we have written several times has an ACEI-like effect, caution if you give the animal an ACE inhibitor.

Cordyceps Cat Dog What to Know

Mushrooms need a simultaneous intake of vitamin C to be best assimilated. – Acerola or Ester C Solgar

Vitamin C tends to acidify the urine, it is advisable to monitor with litmus papers or Multistix if your cat is a subject predisposed to the formation of kidney stones.

The origin of the mushrooms must be certified

Mushrooms are like “sponges” they absorb both nutrients and toxic substances, so it is advisable to always check their origin and organic certification. Mushrooms grown in areas with high environmental and soil pollution become harmful, low-cost products may contain Cordyceps made in China, always check the origin.

Cordyceps cat dog which to buy

*On the market it is possible to buy the Cordyceps Aloha by AVD REFORM (see photo) or the Pure Cordyceps also Aloha on Amazon.

If your cat refuses food after you add Cordyceps powder, you’ll give you two solutions:

    Alternative to Cordyceps AVD (capsules)
Cordyceps Plus (they are tablets and can be hidden in a treat or Cordyceps in drops (Spagyric Mycotherapy)

? To be added to food or given with water orally with syringe. ? If you choose the liquid formulation, I recommend combining 2 products together:

Cordyceps drops Fruiting body 20% + Cordyceps mother tincture 40%

Cordyceps capsules grown from the Cs4 strain

This is another product that I recommend, it is pure mushroom mycelium extract Cordyceps sinensis and mushroom mycelium powder, standardized extract: very high concentration ratio, pharmaceutical quality.

Bioactive components: polysaccharides (β-glucans); cordycepic acid; galactomannan; mannitol; ergosterol (precursor of vitamin D); adenosine; cordicepine; essential amino acids; vitamins (B1, B2 and B12, E and K) and minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Se, Al, Si and Ni).

I started 10 years ago with a truly empirical dosage, today my experience supported and combined with the scientific literature allows me to customize and deviate a lot from what are the standard dosages, in fact I consider medicinal mushrooms superfood!

    Cordyceps Cat Highlights

    • Antioxidant action: Cordyceps is rich in antioxidants that help counteract damage caused by free radicals, protecting kidney cells.
    • Anti-inflammatory properties: By reducing inflammation, cordyceps could help slow the progression of kidney disease.
    • Immune system support: By strengthening the immune system, cordyceps could help the body fight infections and maintain a better overall balance.
    • Improved kidney function: Some studies suggest that cordyceps could help improve kidney function by increasing blood filtration and reducing the production of waste substances.

How to give cordyceps to your cat?

Cordyceps is available in different forms, including capsules, powder, and liquid extracts. It is important to choose a high-quality product that is specifically formulated for animals and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

    What to keep in mind

    • It does not replace veterinary care: Cordyceps is a supplement and should never replace traditional veterinary care.
    • Side effects: Although generally well tolerated, cordyceps can cause side effects in some animals. It is important to monitor your cat for any adverse reactions and consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
    • Product Quality: Choosing a high-quality product from reliable sources is crucial to ensure maximum efficacy and safety.

    In Conclusion

Cordyceps could be a valuable support for cats with kidney disease, but a cautious and personalized approach is essential.

The Importance of Natural Animal Therapies: Experience, Research and Warnings

I am an independent researcher, passionate about nutrition, wellness and natural therapies for over 20 years, with a specialization as an Animal Naturopath. For the past 13 years, I have been studying unconventional therapies in veterinary medicine after my 17-year-old cat was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in 2011.

In that year, I began to experiment with innovative treatments, such as mycotherapy with Cordyceps, unknown in Italy, together with the Heel Protocol, MAP/Gunamino and Omegor. These natural remedies, which I have personally tested on my cat, have shown surprising effectiveness in improving its quality of life.

Over the years, I have continued to test a wide range of phytotherapeutic, mycotherapeutic and homotoxicological remedies, which have restored vitality to my cat and helped many other animals.

In parallel, I have shared my experience and scientific knowledge on various forums, Facebook groups and through my website, Elicats.it.

I invite you to explore my website, where you will find valuable information to support your animals. However, it is essential to rely on professionals for the management of kidney disease and other conditions, as remedies must be introduced carefully, taking into account the animal’s state of health.

Important note: in many Facebook groups, remedies taken from my site are often recommended without the necessary expertise and without a personalized evaluation. Following these tips blindly can be potentially harmful to your pet. The remedies I have shared are the result of years of research, experimentation and dedication, and must be used with the utmost caution. Always remember to consult a qualified professional before embarking on any treatment.

Cat renal failure (CKD) is a disease that can be acute or chronic. Only early diagnosis, followed by targeted and natural treatments, allows an improvement in the quality of life.
