Coriolus versicolor, also known as Trametes versicolor or Polyporus versicolor, is a medicinal mushroom belonging to the Polyporaceae family. It is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and human oncology for its immunomodulatory, anticancer and antioxidant properties. In recent years, thanks to the increase in interest in phytotherapy and veterinary mycotherapy, Coriolus versicolor is also finding application in the treatment of dogs and cats.

    What is Coriolus versicolor?

Coriolus versicolor is an edible mushroom that commonly grows on dead or decaying trees, especially in forest environments. Its main characteristic is the presence of concentric layers of different colors (white, gray, brown, green), from which the name “versicolor” derives, which indicates the variety of colors.

The part used for therapeutic purposes is mainly mycelium or dried fruiting, rich in bioactive polysaccharides, including:

    • PSK (Kureha polysaccharide) – isolated in Japan
    • PSP (Polysaccharopeptide) – isolated in China

These substances are responsible for most of the biological effects of the mushroom.

    Pharmacological Properties of Coriolus versicolor

    1. Immunomodulatory

The polysaccharides present in Coriolus versicolor stimulate the immune system by increasing the activity of macrophages, T lymphocytes and Natural Killer (NK) cells. This makes it useful both in immunodeficiency contexts and in the case of autoimmune diseases, where immune rebalancing is necessary.

    2. Anticancer

Numerous studies have shown that PSK and PSP inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. The mechanism of action includes:

    • Induction of apoptosis (programmed cell death) of cancer cells
    • Inhibition of neoangiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels that feed the tumor)
    • Boosting the immune response against cancer cells

In the veterinary field, Coriolus versicolor is increasingly used as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of canine and feline neoplasms.

    3. Antiviral and antimicrobial

The fungus exhibits antiviral activity against viruses such as FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) in cats, and may aid in the management of chronic bacterial infections due to its indirect antimicrobial properties.

    4. Antioxidant

The phenolic compounds and flavonoids contained in Coriolus versicolor act as powerful antioxidants, reducing oxidative stress and contributing to the prevention of many degenerative diseases.

    5. Hepatoprotective

Some research suggests that Coriolus versicolor may support liver function, aiding detoxification and protecting the liver from toxic damage.

Clinical Applications in Dogs and Cats

    Dogs

    • Neoplasms : Used as a supplement in cases of hemangiosarcoma, mast cell disease, osteosarcoma, lymphoma, and other cancers.
    • Chronic renal failure : thanks to its purifying and immunomodulating properties.
    • Autoimmune diseases : systemic lupus erythematosus, pemphigus, autoimmune arthritis.
    • Toxic overload or intestinal dysbiosis : thanks to the ability to regulate the intestinal microbial flora.
    • Post-surgical or post-chemotherapy support : to improve quality of life and speed up recovery time.

    Cats

    • FIV/FeLV : Immune support in positive cats.
    • Leukemia and other feline cancers : very common in older cats.
    • Chronic diseases : such as kidney failure, chronic hepatitis, enteropathies.
    • Stress or convalescence : to strengthen the body in periods of weakness.

    Method of use and dosage

Coriolus versicolor is available in different formulations for veterinary use:

    • Mycelium powder or dried fruiting
    • Mother tincture (alcoholic or glycer)
    • Capsules or tablets
    • Liquid or paste supplements specific for dogs / cats

Generic dosage (to be adjusted to body weight):

    Powder (mg/kg)100–300 mg/10 kg50–150 mg
Mother tincture (drops)1 drop per kg10–15 drops
Standardized liquidFollow the manufacturer’s instructionsFollow the manufacturer’s instructions

⚠️Important note: The dosage should always be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced in natural therapies. Some products are already formulated specifically for dogs and cats can provide higher bioavailability.

    Safety and contraindications

Coriolus versicolor is generally well tolerated by dogs and cats. Side effects are rare and mild, and may include:

    • Nausea or vomiting (especially with strong dyes)
    • Transient diarrhea
    • Light asthenia (especially at the beginning of treatment)

It is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding or immunosuppressive therapy.

    Conclusion

Coriolus versicolor is a valuable tool in integrated veterinary medicine, thanks to its immune-stimulating, anticancer, antiviral and antioxidant properties. It is particularly useful in cancer support, in the management of chronic diseases and in the general improvement of the health status of dogs and cats.

However, the use of this mushroom requires a scientific and professional approach: it is essential to rely on a veterinarian who is an expert in natural therapies, able to customize the administration based on the individual needs of the animal.
