The compounds researchers actually study are two specific polysaccharide-protein complexes extracted from the mushroom: PSK (polysaccharide-K, also called Krestin), isolated in Japan and used there as a prescription adjunct cancer therapy since 1977, and PSP (polysaccharide-peptide), isolated from a different fungal strain in Shanghai in 1983. Almost all of what science knows about Turkey Tail’s activity comes from these two compounds specifically, not from “the mushroom” as a vague whole.
The Only Study on Turkey Tail and FIV in Cats
This is the study most cat owners searching for “Turkey Tail FIV cats” are actually looking for, and it’s more recent and more specific than most articles online let on.
Forzan et al., 2021, published in Natural Product Research. A research team at the University of Pisa tested a commercially available phytotherapeutic blend containing Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor), Cordyceps sinensis, Ganoderma lucidum, and green tea EGCG against FIV in cell culture. Feline cells were infected with FIV, then split into two groups: one treated with the blend, one left untreated. The researchers measured and compared the viral load between the two groups. The treated, infected cells showed a measurably lower viral load than the untreated, infected cells, demonstrating an antiviral effect of the compound (Forzan et al., 2021, Natural Product Research — DOI: 10.1080/14786419.2021.1960329).
What this study does show: a real, peer-reviewed, feline-specific antiviral effect against FIV, in a lab setting.
What this study does not show: it was conducted on cells in a dish, not in live cats. It tested a four-ingredient blend, not Turkey Tail in isolation, so we cannot say how much of the effect came from Turkey Tail specifically versus the other three ingredients. It has not yet been repeated in a clinical trial with FIV-positive cats. The correct way to describe this study is a promising early signal, not proof of clinical benefit in a living cat.
Is There Research on Turkey Tail for Cats Beyond FIV?
Here is the honest answer, and it’s one you won’t find spelled out clearly on most pet health sites: no. After an extensive search of the published literature, the Forzan et al. (2021) FIV study above is the only study that tests Turkey Tail or Coriolus versicolor directly on cats or feline cells, for any condition. There is no published feline-specific study on Turkey Tail for cancer, FeLV, chronic kidney disease, gingivostomatitis, or general immune support in cats.
That doesn’t mean Turkey Tail has nothing to offer cats. It means that when you see it recommended for feline cancer support, FeLV, or general immunity, that recommendation is built on extrapolation from three other bodies of evidence: dog studies, general PSK/PSP mechanism research, and human clinical use. All three are worth understanding, because they explain why Turkey Tail is used the way it is in integrative veterinary practice, and where the evidence genuinely stops.
What the Dog Research Shows (and Why It Doesn’t Automatically Apply to Cats)
Most of the excitement around Turkey Tail in veterinary medicine actually comes from canine oncology research, specifically two studies on splenic hemangiosarcoma in dogs. It’s important to know both, because the newer one substantially changes the story told by the older one.
Brown and Reetz, 2012, published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. A University of Pennsylvania pilot study gave high-dose PSP as a single agent to dogs with hemangiosarcoma in a double-blind, randomized design. The results suggested delayed metastatic progression and longer survival times than historical reports for the disease (Brown & Reetz, 2012, Evid Based Complement Alternat Med — DOI: 10.1155/2012/384301). This is the study that made PSP, sold commercially as I’m-Yunity, popular in integrative veterinary oncology.
Gedney et al., 2022, published in Veterinary and Comparative Oncology. A much larger, prospective follow-up study on 101 dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma compared PSP alone, PSP combined with doxorubicin chemotherapy, and doxorubicin alone. The result: adding PSP to doxorubicin after splenectomy did not improve survival. Why this matters for cats: these are dog studies, on a specific canine cancer, and even within dogs the picture is now genuinely mixed rather than clearly positive. Treat any claim that Turkey Tail “fights cancer in cats” as unproven, not as an established fact borrowed from the dog data.
The General Science Behind PSK and PSP
Separate from any specific disease study, PSK and PSP have a real, decades-long body of laboratory and human research behind them, which is why they keep showing up in integrative protocols for cats despite the lack of feline-specific trials.
In laboratory studies, PSK and PSP stimulate macrophages, T-lymphocytes, and Natural Killer cells, the immune cells responsible for controlling both tumor growth and viral infection. PSK has been a registered, prescription-only adjunct cancer therapy in Japan since 1977, primarily used alongside chemotherapy in colorectal cancer. This regulatory history reflects real human clinical use, but it is not the same as feline safety or efficacy data, and dosing in a 30 kg human adult under oncology supervision tells us very little about the right amount for a 4 kg cat.
There is also general, non-feline-specific antiviral research on Turkey Tail worth mentioning honestly. Krupodorova et al. According to PubMed, a 2024 global systematic review and meta-analysis covering 113 studies found that FIV seropositivity in cats worldwide averages 9.43% (95% CI 8.24–10.78%), with rates highest in Asia (14.34%) and lowest in North America (5.93%). Turkey Tail for cats is available as standardized powder, tincture, capsules, or liquid extracts. I’ve used the Trametes versicolor extract from Golden Wave, formulated for companion animals, in my own practice.
General starting guidance (always confirm the exact amount and product with your vet):
- Standardized powder: roughly 100–300 mg per 10 kg of body weight (50–150 mg for cats and small dogs)
- Tincture: about 1 drop per kg of body weight (roughly 10–15 drops for most cats)
- Commercial capsules or blends: follow the manufacturer’s label, since concentration of PSK/PSP varies by product
The single most important thing to check on any Turkey Tail product is whether it’s standardized to a specific PSK, PSP, or beta-glucan percentage. A label that just says “mushroom powder” with no guaranteed percentage can vary enormously in active compound content from batch to batch, which matters far more than price or packaging.
Safety and Precautions
Turkey Tail is generally well tolerated in cats. Reported side effects are mild and usually transient: nausea, vomiting, occasional loose stool, or mild lethargy in the first few days.
