Chronic renal failure (CKD) is one of the most common diseases in older cats. Diagnosed early – especially in stages 1 and 2 – it can be managed in such a way as to extend the life of the cat by several years, significantly improving its quality.
I myself faced this diagnosis in 2011, when my 17-year-old cat was diagnosed with CKD. Since then, I have dedicated over 13 years to the study and experimentation of natural, phytotherapeutic and homotoxicological therapies, with surprising results. Today I share with you the remedies that I have personally tested, with the hope that they can also help your furry friend.
A hint of kidney failure in cats:
The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) CLASSIFIES chronic kidney failure in cats into four stages.
How the kidneys work… and what happens when they no longer work
The cat’s kidneys perform vital functions:
- They filter toxins and waste from the blood
- They regulate electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium)
- Maintain water balance
- They control blood pressure
- Stimulate the production of red blood cells
When nephrons (renal functional units) are damaged – due to aging, infection, toxins or inflammation – the filtering capacity decreases. Waste products accumulate in the blood, causing fatigue, dehydration, vomiting and, in advanced cases, anemia.
The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) classifies IRC into 4 stages:
Stages 1–2: The kidneys are still partially functioning → great opportunity for natural intervention
Stages 3–4: Advanced kidney injury → goal: to alleviate symptoms and support well-being.
Cat Chronic renal failure How do I manage the 1-2 stage
Renal failure Late stages (III-IV) How to help your cat
Life expectancy depends on the stage of the disease, stage 1-2 of CKD, the cat can live several years, following the natural cures that I have experienced over the years, at the third or fourth stage it can live months or a few years because the kidneys are now very compromised.
Cat kidney failure remedies

The kidneys no longer work
The cat with renal impairment always has a deterioration in kidney function, The kidney is made up of small tubules, called nephrons and the glomerulus. When a nephron is damaged by causes such as aging, toxins, infections, it stops filtering waste products and the body accumulates toxic substances.
Renal failure: what are the natural cures?
These are some of the fundamental natural remedies (these are personal experiences applied to my animals, general info – always ask your vet for advice)
Natural Remedies I Use (That Helped My Cat)
All of the following remedies should be tailored to the stage of the disease, the age and the general condition of the cat. They do not replace veterinary therapy, but they can complement it with great effectiveness.
1. Solidago (Goldenrod) – The Heart of Kidney Support
- Action: purifying, gentle diuretic, anti-inflammatory
- Recommended shape: Solidago S or Solidago virga aurea Compositum (Heel)
- Typical dosage: 3–5 blood cells, 3 times daily (CH5), for 1–2 week cycles, 3–4 times per year
→ Can also be used in prevention!
2. Horsetail (Horsetail) – Remineralizing and Protective
- Action: diuresis without loss of mineral salts, astringent and anti-haemorrhagic action
- Best for: Cats with inflamed or intoxicated kidneys
3. Birch – Natural Draining
- Helps the kidneys eliminate toxins gently, without overloading them
4. Bearberry – Urinary tract antiseptic
- Astringent, decongestant and antimicrobial properties
- Useful in case of associated infections or recurrent inflammation
5. Mycotherapy: Cordyceps sinensis
- Advanced renal support: Studies show that Cordyceps improves glomerular filtration and reduces proteinuria
- I used it already in 2011: it was a turning point for my cat!
6. Hydration and daily management
- Fresh water always available (preferably from a fountain)
- Wet diet: essential for maintaining hydration
- Avoid ultra-processed foods and chemical additives
💡 Practical tip: if you use remedies in alcoholic drops, pour them into a little hot water and wait 10 minutes: the alcohol evaporates, but the active ingredient remains!

Cordyceps
Reishi

Solidago S – strengthen and support the kidneys!
Goldenrod helps shows excellent healing power, even with severe kidney failure, Solidago can also be administered as a prevention, which is why Solidago Ch5 comes to our aid about 3-4 times a year for one or two weeks, 3 times a day 3-5 blood cells.
The mixture promotes diuresis through stimulation of the renal epithelium with increased cellular activity
The elimination of urine is carried out without irritating side effects, it is a suitable product for intoxicated, inflamed kidneys. It increases renal circulation and urinary tract resistance to bacterial loads and inflammation.
Horsetail has diuretic properties without burdening the kidneys. It also has an anti-haemorrhagic, astringent and purifying action.
Solidago virga urea Compositum increases renal circulation and the resistance of the urinary tract to bacterial loads and inflammation.
The Birch contained in 07 Solidago virga urea Compositum promotes the elimination of toxins via the kidneys.
Horsetail has diuretic properties without burdening the kidneys, avoiding the loss of salts thanks to its remineralizing activity.
Goldenrod has strong antiseptic properties on the urinary tract.
Bearberry also has antiseptic properties, as well as astringent, diuretic and decongestant properties.
If you want to reduce alcohol because this generally causes discomfort, I recommend pouring the drops into hot water and waiting, before giving them, a maximum of ten minutes: in this way most of the alcohol will evaporate.
The Importance of Natural Animal Therapies: Experience, Research and Warnings
I am an independent researcher, passionate about nutrition, wellness and natural therapies for over 20 years, with a specialization as an Animal Naturopath. For the past 13 years, I have been studying unconventional therapies in veterinary medicine after my 17-year-old cat was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in 2011.
In that year, I began to experiment with innovative treatments, such as mycotherapy with Cordyceps, unknown in Italy, together with the Heel Protocol, MAP/Gunamino and Omegor. These natural remedies, which I have personally tested on my cat, have shown surprising effectiveness in improving its quality of life.
Over the years, I have continued to test a wide range of phytotherapeutic, mycotherapeutic and homotoxicological remedies, which have restored vitality to my cat and helped many other animals.
In parallel, I have shared my experience and scientific knowledge on various forums, Facebook groups and through my website, Elicats.it.
I invite you to explore my website, where you will find valuable information to support your animals. However, it is essential to rely on professionals for the management of kidney disease and other conditions, as remedies must be introduced carefully, taking into account the animal’s state of health.
Important note: in many Facebook groups, remedies taken from my site are often recommended without the necessary expertise and without a personalized evaluation. Following these tips blindly can be potentially harmful to your pet. The remedies I have shared are the result of years of research, experimentation and dedication, and must be used with the utmost caution. Always remember to consult a qualified professional before embarking on any treatment.
Don’t follow protocols found online without supervision – every cat is different. What worked for one, may not be good for another.
- Natural remedies require expertise: they must be introduced gradually and monitored.
- Collaborate with a veterinarian who is open to complementary therapies: it is the key to an integrated and safe approach.
Cat renal failure (CKD) is a disease that can be acute or chronic. Only early diagnosis, followed by targeted and natural treatments, allows an improvement in the quality of life.
