    The Science Behind Hope

The promise of extending the lives of cats with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) up to 30 years is no longer just a newspaper headline, but a concrete clinical project. However, navigating scientific ads and commercial products is difficult.

In this article, we take stock of the situation in December 2025, based exclusively on official sources: the Institute for AIM Medicine (IAM), Dr. Toru Miyazaki’s publications, and reports from the University of Tokyo.

    “Anti-Scam!

⚠️ WARNING: Don’t waste money on “Miracle Protocols”!

The hope of curing cat kidney failure is prompting many to search online for the famous “AIM Therapy”. But there is a lot of confusion (and who takes advantage of it).

Let’s clarify with the official data 2025/2026: ❌ Online products called “Dr. Toru Protocol” or sold by “Greycoat Research” are NOT affiliated with the Institute for AIM Medicine. They cost hundreds of dollars but are simple multivitamins. Don’t fall into the trap!

✅ THE TRUTH: The real (injectable) drug has been in clinical trials in 26 Japanese hospitals since June 2025. The goal is to market it in 2027.

The “Clogged Pipe”: How Does the Disease Work?

Why is kidney failure so fatal for cats? In a paper published by the University of Tokyo, Dr. Miyazaki uses a simple but powerful analogy: that of the exhaust pipe.

The kidneys work like a filter. When cells die, they create debris that needs to be eliminated.

    • In other animals: The AIM (Apoptosis Inhibitor of Macrophage) protein acts like a plumber, detecting debris and allowing macrophages to “unclog” the renal tubules.
    • In cats: Due to a unique genetic trait, the cat’s AIM is “lazy.” It remains too closely bound to antibodies (IgM) in the blood and does not activate when needed.
    • The result: The “tubes” (renal tubules) become progressively clogged. The kidney cannot clean itself up and the tissue dies irreversibly.

Clinical trial: the official dates (IAM update)

The speculations are over. The official website of the Institute for AIM Medicine (IAM) has confirmed crucial details about the drug trial (recombinant AIM).

    • Start Date: The clinical trial officially started on June 13, 2025.
    • The Network: It involves 26 selected veterinary hospitals across Japan.
    • Objective: To demonstrate that AIM injection can unblock renal tubules and restore function even in sick cats.
    • Outlook: Dr. Miyazaki, in a recent interview with JBpress (March 2025), reiterated the goal of completing the regulatory steps to make the drug available to the public presumably by 2027.

    Dr. Miyazaki: A People-Funded Mission

The story behind this drug is unique. As reported by Jiji Press and confirmed by the author’s profile on ResearchGate, the project risked dying due to lack of funds during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    • The turning point: In 2021-2022, thousands of cat owners donated about 300 million yen ($2 million) to the University of Tokyo.
    • Independence: Thanks to this support, Dr. Miyazaki left the university to found IAM, a non-profit institute dedicated solely to bringing this treatment to market.
    • Active Search: Dr. Miyazaki’s ResearchGate profile shows that research has not stopped: in January 2025 he published a new study on the role of AIM in the prognosis of hemodialysis patients, confirming that science is advancing for both cats and humans.

Products on the Trade: Truths and Myths

    A. AIM30 Food (Marukan) – Nutritional Support

This is the only commercial product that mentions a technical collaboration based on Miyazaki’s studios.

    • What’s in it: The “A-30” complex is a mixture of amino acids (Cystine, Methionine, Taurine).
    • What it is used for: It is designed as a daily support to help, albeit mildly, the activation of AIM. It is not a cure, but a nutritional prevention.

    B. Online Supplements (“Dr. Toru Protocol” / Greycoat) – CAUTION

    AIM Therapy and Cat’s Kidneys

It is essential to consult official sources.

    • What official sources say: When visiting the Institute for AIM Medicine (iamaim.jp) website, there is no mention of affiliations with companies that sell supplements online under the name “Greycoat” or “Dr. Toru Protocol” in the list of partners and news.
    • The risk: Many users report that these products exploit the doctor’s name to sell generic supplements at high prices. Since they are not validated in official IAM trials, extreme caution is advised and to rely only on certified veterinary channels.
    • 4.1 The “Greycoat Research” Entity
    • The most common name in this area is Greycoat Research, a company apparently based in South Korea that markets a product called “Dr. Toru Protocol”.
    • 4.1.1 Criticality Analysis and Warnings
    • Misuse of Name: The use of the name “Dr. Toru” (an explicit reference to Toru Miyazaki) suggests a direct filiation or endorsement by the scientist.
    • Community Denial and Lack of Affiliation: Surveys conducted by owner communities and cross-analysis with official IAM partners confirm that Greycoat Research is NOT affiliated with the Institute for AIM Medicine. There is no official partnership record.
    • Generic composition: The product is sold at exorbitant prices ($50-$144/month) and contains generic ingredients such as Resveratrol and Coenzyme Q10, mixed with an unspecified “amino acid complex”. While these ingredients may have generic antioxidant benefits, marketing them as “Dr. Toru’s protocol” is a potentially deceptive marketing practice (“health washing”)

    Conclusion: What to do today?

The science is solid and the trial is finally a reality. Waiting for 2027.

    • The drug: It is a recombinant injectable formulation of AIM, designed to overcome the binding defect and actively clean clogged renal tubules in cats with advanced CKD.
    • Timeline: Sources indicate that multicenter clinical trials began in 2024/2025 in 26 Japanese veterinary hospitals. Regulatory approval is expected in 2026, with potential commercialization in 2027.
